History & Bios
Norman Schell is best
known as a founding father of two of New England's great musical legacies:
Worcester's famous Y-Not Coffee House, still remembered for putting Worcester
on the folk music map in the 60's. And Vanguard recording artists and folk
rock pioneers, Clean Living.
Norman's
performance credits extend back over thirty years to the golden age of the
Boston folk renaissance and include regular appearances such as well known
Charles Street folk music clubs as The Loft, The Rose, The Turks Head and
The Sword In The Stone. While serving as front man, lead vocalist and primary
song writer for the widely popular band Clean Living, Norman shared bills
with Tanya Tucker, Lou Reed, Bruce Springsteen, DocWatson, James Taylor, Taj
Mahal, and Billy Joel, only to name a few.
Rick Tiven is the Berklee
trained son of a classical pianist. His command of his instrument is that
of a master. Widely renowned throughout the northeast as a session and a sideman,
Rick is also a talented single performer and an experienced bandleader in
his own right. His musical partnership with Norman goes back twenty-five years,
to Clean Living at the height of that band's fame. His signature violin orchestrations-
they can hardly be called simple parts- fill the groups arrangements with
richly textured and emotionally evocative power. Always supporting and fulfilling
the vocalist's phrasing and highlighting the rhythmic elements of the song.
Dan Hunt has been playing
guitar since he was eleven years old. He studied under several new England
masters including Rick Falco, Joe D'Angelo and Peter Clemente. Dan has been
playing professionally for over twenty years now, and has established an enviable
reputation as a session and sideman in the Worcester to Boston music scene,
playing in Country, Blues, and Swing bands. His musical partnership with his
wife Galadriel has been a fruitful one, with the duo gaining great attention
in the music scene. He currently teaches all styles of guitar at Clemente
Music in Worcester. (clemente-music.com) Dan's choice of guitar work with Youth Well Spent is a
1947 Gretch Syncromatic flat-top.
Galadriel Hunt has been
surrounded by music all of her life. She was introduced
to piano and guitar at an early age and later banjo and mandolin. She settled
on the bass as the instrument she would concentrate on in 1998. She quickly
developed as a player and within months was playing out professionally. Gail
and her husband Dan make an unusual husband and wife team, equally at home
in Folk, Country, Blues and Swing. Gail plays both pizzicato and bowed bass
with her 1954 Kay ¾ - sized bass. Her bowing adds a penetrating presence underscoring
the melodic lines.
